How do diagnostic masters approach uncertainty?
What are the ways in which this is one and the same with how artists approach the world and their work?
After pursuing these questions over two decades of research, teaching, and consulting in medical humanities, Miller has come to believe that what sets masterful clinicians apart from the workplace norm has to do with one key thing: approach to uncertainty.
Rather than reacting to uncertainty as an enemy (avoidance, fear, overwhelm, apathy, overtesting), masterful clinicians leverage uncertainty as a space for discovery and collaboration. They look with it, like you would a work of art with a friend.
It may feel like a leap of faith, but reliably, this kind of curiosity and its associated practices represent the engine for finding the pathway forward together with the patient and team.
As a result of this research, Miller developed her Looking With Uncertainty® framework, encapsulating the mindset and actions of effective clinical approaches to uncertainty.
The Looking With Uncertainty® framework provides the conceptual basis for seminars and workshops for leaders, faculty, and learners in the health professions. This interactive program carefully integrates medical didactics with experiential learning in art, narrative techniques, small group work, coaching, and feedback. Learners glean knowledge about uncertainty, as well as tools for navigating and communicating about it.
Miller teaches a full-semester version of this course for future healthcare professionals offered at Brandeis University, through the Health: Science and Social Policy Program, in collaboration with the Rose Art Museum.
